COMMANDER’S CORNER Harland Dains
Our fund raisers for the New Year are going to be
starting in a few months, For Easter and Mother's Day we will be selling See's
Candy. In May we will be getting donations for Buddy Poppy. We will be looking
for volunteers to help out for three or four hours on a given day and if you
have the time to volunteer more than once. If you have never done this before I
think you will be pleasantly surprised by the number of people that thank the
veterans for their service. Anyone interested can contact Terry Berkery or
Harland Dains, our numbers are on page three on the newsletter
Patriotism Defined Noah Webster's an American Dictionary of the English
Language, 1828:
patriotism, n. Love of one's country; the passion which aims to serve one's
country, either in defending it from invasion, or protecting its rights and
maintaining its laws and institutions in vigor and purity. Patriotism is the
characteristic of a good citizen, the noblest passion that animates a man in the
character of a citizen.
Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition, copyright 2004:
Patriotism, n. Love for or devotion to one's country. Note how the definitions
have changed. With its objective actions, Noah Webster's patriotism is very
different from the vague, subjective patriotism of one who only feels love for
his country. True patriotism is not just an emotional feeling; it is action.
Webster's original definition starts with a love for country but moves to
specific actions: service to country. defense of country, protection of the
rights of country, maintenance of the laws and institutions of country, and
preservation of religion and morality in public and private life. this kind of
patriotism puts the needs of the country above personal or partisan desires, as
well as above the favor of foreign nations.

Report Doug Shelstad
Greetings friends! Thanks to Bill Lebeck for standing in for me at the January meeting. I had the rare opportunity to go help my brothers and nephew cut up two large trees that had fallen at his cabin. This time of year it is normally snowed in. Bill reported that Shirley Smith, past President of the Women's Auxiliary recently passed away. It was voted upon to make a generous donation to Snowline Hospice from the Auxiliary and the Post in Shirley's memory. Fred Morley was back in the hospital again. Mona McCoy continues to improve while she is at Gold Country Health Center. On January 17, 1991 the Gulf War began and January 27, 1993 was the signing of Vietnam Peace Accord. Until next time, Chaplain Doug
.
PRESIDENT’S CORNER Terry Berkery
Since most of us are sitting down organizing our Christmas
decorations while contemplating getting our paper work in order for tax prep,
how about getting rid of some of that paperwork that has been staring at you
from between the wrapping paper and bills and sending in the auxiliary reports.
It is really important for the related chair people to receive these in a timely
manner. Also, if anyone is having trouble receiving the district newsletter to
let me know by e-mail or telephone and I will be happy to pass it on to those
who have not or who would be interested in receiving it by e-mail instead of
U.S. mail. My e-mail is terryis2003@yahoo.com and phone 530-626-5902.
Remember enlisting new members is still at the for front in importance to our
auxiliary. Keep a membership card in your purse to have at the ready in case you
meet someone that would be interested.
Take care and let's be thankful for the rain and snow.
Ladies, keep February 25th opened on your calendar for a "Pampered Chef" party
being held at the Veterans Hall.
The party will begin at 11:00am in the bar. Come and enjoy the presentation by
Shawnee. Some recipes will be shared as food is prepared using the inventory
from the Pampered Chef. No need to spend a lot of money as there are many items
in the catalog that won't "break the bank."
Chaplains Report
Diane Primicerio
We are saddened to report that we recently have lost two members. Mabel Burton passed away in November and Shirley Smith in December. Prayers go out to their families. Mona McCoy seems to be recovering well as each visit finds her progressing. She obviously enjoys her friends coming by to visit with her at Gold Country so please take time to go see her.
